Mark Wiser's text "Protozoa and Human Disease" is a well crafted and easy to read introduction to infectious protozooa. Dr. Wiser covers all of the classical parasitological topics in a high-yield format and expertly connects the basic sciences with clinical and public health interventions. In addition (and more importantly), he has fully integrated the latest modern parasitological topics into this traditional framework. The text includes sections on molecular epidemiology, parasite genetics, and immunoparasitology. Each chapter follows the same basic layout (akin to the WHO Control of Communicable Diseases Manual) organized along a taxonomic scheme. The book is a bit pricey for a trichrome paperback (black and white with blue). But, to its credit, it sets a new standard.

"Protozoa and Human Disease" represents the latest text from the faculty of tropical medicine at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The school has a venerable history of crafting the some of the finest texts on parasitology beginning in the 1930's with Faust's Human Helminthology. If one was interested in the traditional paring of a textbook with an atlas then I would fully recommend the indispensable Atlas of Human Parasitology.

Richard Rogers, Ph.D., has long been recognized as perhaps the leading expert on malingering in the United States. He and a law school professor, Daniel Shuman, have co-authored a great book on forensic mental health issues which has just been released: Fundamentals of Forensic Practice: Mental Health and Criminal Law (Springer Publications, 2005) by Richard Rogers and Daniel W. Shuman. The book covers the major issues addressed by mental health experts in criminal cases (e.g., insanity, competency, responsibility, penalty phase aggravation and

mitigation, risk assessment), as well as the different stages of

proceedings (e.g., diversion, bail motions, trial, sentencing, civil commitments, competency to be executed). As one might expect, it details how a forensic mental health expert should go about performing a reliable evaluation, including addressing the various issues that are inherent in mental health evaluations (e.g., malingering). I picked up this book with great hope, but it has fallen short to my expectation. The author has presented the idea of PK modelling in a very lucid way and for that the effort of the author is commendable. But this book is really very basic, most of the times it just introduces with the basic concept but very unwillful to go beyond of that. Sometimes it reiterates the same thing again and again, as a result number of pages has been increased withoug much increment of information in the book. This book mostly discusses with the IV method of drug administration. It provides the idea of two compartment pk model for Oral administration of drug only in a single para and does not provide any mathematical calculation. In nutshell, the book is very basic and does not help anybody who wants to be self-sufficient in PK data analysis.

Most of the book's authors are statisticians at Australia's Queensland University of Technology, with over half of the 24 included papers co-authored by Kerrie Mengersen. There is considerable variety in the models on display; predictably, some papers are of the "let's apply this known technique to that dataset" variety, but some go deeper and do have pedagogical value. The below-five-star ranking only reflects my concern about the book's value-for-money: people who work with Bayesian statistics tend to have academic affiliations and university-provided journal subscriptions, and can go to the original (or similar) papers. "Case studies..." is a helpful addition to the two applications-minded books by Peter Congdon.
