Product Description

This book is a comprehensive guide to the evidence, theories, and practical issues associated with recovery from stuttering in early childhood and into adolescence. It examines evidence that stuttering is associated with a range of biological factors — such as genetics — and psychological factors such as anxiety and it critically assesses theoretical accounts that attempt to integrate these findings. Written so that it can be used flexibly to meet the demands of courses about stuttering, the book may be used as a text at the undergraduate or graduate level in psychology or speech-language science.

Recovery from Stuttering (Language and Speech Disorders) Review

Just finished Peter Howell's book "Recovery from Stuttering". Overall the organization of the book is very intuitive. In my estimation there are very few books that so exhaustively cover the science of stuttering, and do so in such a scholarly way. This book should be a valuable resource for researchers or students seeking greater empirical understanding of stuttering, particularly with respect to more recent literature. Overall, Howell does a good job of "making sense of it all".

Howell first provides some perspective on various definitions of stuttering, then capably reviews the science of stuttering, from linguistic and motor factors to genetic and developmental contributions. The chapter on genetic aspects of stuttering is especially informative. Next Howell reviews several frameworks of stuttering, including his own EXPLAN model. This section was more challenging to read, but of course various models of stuttering are rooted in different theoretical perspectives, making comparison often quite messy. Finally, Howell tackles the issue of stuttering development.

Howell is more or less even-handed when discussing current theoretical issues, taking a position but in the end leaving it up to the reader to decide. Some examples are to what extent WWR should be considered stuttering behavior, the role of syntactic processing in developmental stuttering, and how motor and linguistic factors relate to each other. The only potential drawback of the book is that it may be somewhat dense for many undergraduate or Master's level students. On the other hand, it could very well complement a more clinically oriented book. In general, the book is probably geared toward individuals who wish to understand more thoroughly the current state of the science of stuttering.

In summary, there is much we know about stuttering, but there is so much more work that needs to be done. Howell deftly makes this apparent. To this end, one valuable take-away of the book, at least for me, is that deciding what to investigate next depends to a great extent on having a thorough understanding of what is known right now. For this, Howell provides some much needed clarity.

As hacker organizations surpass drug cartels in terms of revenue generation, it is clear that the good guys are doing something wrong in information security. Providing a simple foundational remedy for our security ills, Security De-Engineering: Solving the Problems in Information Risk Management is a definitive guide to the current problems impacting corporate information risk management. It explains what the problems are, how and why they have manifested, and outlines powerful solutions. Ian Tibble delves into more than a decade of experience working with close to 100 different Fortune 500s and multinationals to explain how a gradual erosion of skills has placed corporate information assets on a disastrous collision course with automated malware attacks and manual intrusions. Presenting a complete journal of hacking feats and how corporate networks can be compromised, the book covers the most critical aspects of corporate risk information risk management. Outlines six detrimental security changes that have occurred in the past decade Examines automated vulnerability scanners and rationalizes the differences between their perceived and actual value Considers security products including intrusion detection, security incident event management, and identity management The book provides a rare glimpse at the untold stories of what goes on behind the closed doors of private corporations. It details the tools and products that are used, typical behavioral traits, and the two types of security experts that have existed since the mid-nineties—the hackers and the consultants that came later. Answering some of the most pressing questions about network penetration testing and cloud computing security, this book provides you with the understanding and tools needed to tackle today s risk management issues as well as those on the horizon.

Security De-Engineering: Solving the Problems in Information Risk Management Review

This book is probably the most thought-provoking book on security I read in the last 5-7 years! While I'm somewhat known from my proclivity to exaggerate, I assure you this is not an exaggeration. As I was reading it, I felt like I connected to deep layers of the subconsciousness of security industry.

In fact, the influence this book already had on me is palpable: I found myself using some of the terms (such as author's favorites, "intellectual capital" and "CASE") and concepts on the next day after I started reading it.
As a brief summary, the book investigates the evolution of the way we do information security from the "hacker-lead" late 1990s to "compliance-heavy" late 2000s and today. The author also highlights dramatic problems with today's approach to security and suggests some of the solutions in the way people think and operate around security.

In fact, it might be one of the most influential books ever written in history of security industry - the one that appeared at the best possible time when it's most needed. Along the same line, I have grown worried about the ranks of security professionals who are not hands-on with technology and who have never secured production systems. Just as the author, I've been grown frustrated with the ranks of idiots who equate compliance and security. Even author's rant about ethics is something I've been thinking for years.

The author slaughters a few of the sacred cows of security industry: one that "executives are clueless" and the one that we "must have reliable actuarial data on incidents to stay relevant." He also highlights a few categories of security products, which are notorious for not delivering value and explains the reasons for that. Most of his points are backed up by specific cases from his experience, going back to the end of 1990s when the security industry was born.

And, of course, as with any thought-provoking writing, I cannot say I agree with every word I read. For example, I am much less negative on the vulnerability assessment technology than the author (I don't think they give you 50% "false negatives" on common platforms today). Furthermore, I abhor the use (misuse, really) of "ROI" for justifying security spending. Style-wise, the author is a little too fond of repetitions to my taste. However, having a summary after each chapter is a great idea.

Finally, despite the unreasonably high price, I feel that every member of the security community MUST read this book. Literally every chapter will have insights that will make you a better security professional today.

Software Testing and Quality Assurance: Theory and Practice Review

This book is very inconsistent in helping you learn. For example, chapter 10 is full of notation on finite state machines, but things are hardly explained at all. There is hardly any reasoning for why you are generating all of these various sequences. Then look at chapter 17 and you get definitions like:

Learnability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to learn its applications.

Operability: The capability of the software product to enable the user to operate and control it.

Attractiveness: The capability of the software product to be liked by the user.

How can you go from the insanely complex finite state machine stuff to telling someone what attractiveness is. And they never vary to say "the capability of the software product". The book wastes time writing that out where it could be using that time to explain the concepts that are actually difficult. It definitely seems the book was written by two different people.

Providing a fresh perspective on this increasingly important function, Software Testing as a Service explains, in simple language, how to use software testing to improve productivity, reduce time to market, and reduce costly errors. The book explains how the normal functions of manufacturing can be applied to commoditize the software testing service to achieve consistent quality across all software projects. This up-to-date reference reviews different software testing tools, techniques, and practices and provides succinct guidance on how to estimate costs, allocate resources, and make competitive bids. Replete with examples and case histories, this book shows software development managers, software testers, testing managers, and entrepreneurs how proper planning can lead to the creation of software that proves itself to be head and shoulders above the competition.

Software Testing as a Service Review

The book is well-written by a knowledgeable author who has been in the trench before. I'd recommend to management and technical personnel alike to read this book to avoid making the same mistakes and learn from people who can say " I was there and have done it!".

Product Description

Stimulant drugs are widely used in the treatment of ADHD in children and adults. Hundreds of studies over the past 60 years have demonstrated their effectiveness in improving attention span, increasing impulse control, and reducing hyperactivity and restlessness. Despite widespread interest in these compounds, however, their mechanisms of action in the central nervous system have remained poorly understood. Recent advances in the basic and clinical neurosciences now afford the possibility of elucidating these mechanisms. The current volume is the first to bring this expanding knowledge to bear on the central question of why and how stimulants exert their therapeutic effects. The result is a careful, comprehensive, and insightful integration of material by well-known scientists that significantly advances our understanding of stimulant effects and charts a course for future research. Part I presents a comprehensive description of the clinical features of ADHD and the clinical response to stimulants. Part II details the cortical and subcortical neuroanatomy and functional neurophysiology of dopamine and norepinephrine systems with respect to the regulation of attention, arousal, activity, and impulse control and the effects of stimulants on these systems. Part III is devoted to clinical research, including recent studies of neuroimaging, genetics, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of stimulants, effects on cognitive functions, neurophysiological effects in humans with and without ADHD and in non-human primates, and comparison of stimulants and non-stimulants in the treatment of ADHD. Part IV is a masterful synthesis that presents alternative models of stimulant drug action and generates key hypotheses for continued research. The volume will be of keen interest to researchers and clinicians in psychiatry, psychology, and neurology, neuroscientists studying stimulants, and those pursuing development of new drugs to treat ADHD.

Stimulant Drugs and ADHD: Basic and Clinical Neuroscience Review

This is an important technical work for anyone concerned with Attention Deficit Disorder. While not ideal for those without advanced degrees, parents and adults in an ADHD system may find it worth their while to work through the highly specialized language. The articles assess from different scientific perspectives the trajectory of stimulant medication. While priced very fairly given its highly technical content, ADHD support groups maybe able to share the cost and the book. Members within the group could select a chapter, and then present it to their group. Most of the articles contain at least a few sections that will be understandable to non-scientists. Such a process could improve physician patient communication about the medication. Detractors of stimulant medication have to come to grips with the enormous relief that these medications provide for adults and children. While the specific locations and dynamics of the epenephrine and dopamine interactions remain shrouded, the clinical evidence overwhelming attested to the efficacy of stimulant medication. Until detractors can produce similar empirical data, resources have to be allocated to treatments that actually work. The book's purpose is to bring together the best and most current data available as a way of supporting and furthering pharmaceutical research. In this purpose the editor's and contributor's reveals science at its best, methodically navigating a dense forest of dimly understood variables in an attempt to relieve human suffering and push back the boundaries of ignorance. They echo our ancestors who learned to harness fire.
