This book, which has been published well before the dust has even settled from the Global Financial Crisis, is quite simply the best written, most up-to-date, and clearest work available for understanding the state of international banking regulation, what went wrong and what has to be addressed. There are a number of quite good specialist books, but none that I am aware of provide the comprehensiveness, broad overview and clarity (on a highly technical subject) that this book does. I recommend Schooner & Taylor to anyone who wants to gain a reliable and balanced overview of the state of global bank regulation.

If you have cut your teeth on Donald Knuth's classic three volumes, "The Art of Computer Programming", and you want more detail, at a similar level of complexity, then consider Storer's book.It delves into lists, recursion, trees, graphs, heaps and sets. Like Knuth, Storer thoughtfully supplies an extensive list of questions at the end of each chapter that will greatly deepen your appreciation of the field if you tackle them. Ok, he doesn't give answers, but think of that as greater incentive on your part to solve them. There are almost 400 questions in the book. The teaching style is similar to Knuth, in that it has all the rigour needed by an algorithm designer like yourself, without drowning you in epsilon-delta ultra rigour like a pure maths text.Note that the only code fragments are in pseudocode. This should not be a problem for you. I am assuming you are experienced enough that what you need is understanding of an algorithm, and that manually converting it to code is straightforward and a purely secondary issue.The take home message is that this is excellent for anyone doing serious programming. Another motley McGraw-Hill product. First copyrighted in 1913. The author appears to have died prior to 1976, and the book has been maintained by hired help. Don't try to use this as a textbook; treat it as a reference only. You never really know whether some item is up to date or 50 or 80 years old. Examples: There is a lot of treatment of two-phase (yup, 90 degrees) power, including at 25 hertz, and of multi-kilovolt series incandescent streetlighting, plus knob and tube wiring. Also, it is stated that the highest radio frequency in use is 30 megahertz, whereas in reality we're up to 1,000 or 2,000 times that just now. This book is a curiousity; charming if you have the cash, but if you don't, maybe you should be getting something more coherent.

Applied Organizational Communication: Principles and Pragmatics for Future Practice (Routledge Communication Series) Review

I have used this text for masters-level coursework in organizational communication for years, starting with the first edition in the 1990s.

But I recommend that both educators and students of the topic update to what appears to be the latest edition: The third edition, copyright 2008. While 2008 is already four years old--"forever" in today's textbook market--this one is still worth the money. I haven't yet found a replacement worth the money or the time needed to retool my courseware around it.

While the material on communication technology is always changing, and therefore out of date as soon as a book is released to the print market, the other material is well-researched and described. Again, the Third Edition offers refreshed theoretical and practical insight as well as topical/chapter reorganization.

Harris offers, as I have said to many students over the years, the best mix of theoretical sophistication and pragmatic application. This book is worth keeping.

For leader/managers outside of the academic setting, the book is written in an accessible and understandable way. For instructors and students in the academy, though, Harris offers issues and questions in such a way as to provide excellent points of departure for group processing, and personalization by knowledgeable and experienced instructors.

While a little pricey, this book still stands out among the many that address the topic.

What would be perfect for my current teaching needs is a volume specifically targeted to communication in public organizations. "Organizational communication in public service" would be a hot seller not just in my classes, but in many courses taught in a large number of departments and schools of Public Affairs/Public Administration across the U.S. and increasingly around the world. Good communication at work is not just a business need--it's a pressing governance need as well.
