    Ashenden teaches digital design from scratch. The prerequisites are minimal, as perhaps you might be glad to know. While many readers might come from electrical engineering, you don't need much analog circuit experience. Digital circuitry treats the transistors and other components at a very simple but useful level of understanding. In other words, if your background is pure computer science, and no hardware, the book should still work for you.

    The flow of teaching is fairly standard. Start with Boolean algebra and the simplest circuits that implement these. Then build up from there. [How else can you teach this stuff?] The coverage is thorough, for a first text on the subject. The only slight quirk is that the problems tend to be a little too simple. It's necessary to have easy questions. But some harder problems might also help.

    The narrative also uses Verilog as the Hardware Description Language. The de facto standard for many, and well worth learning if you're serious about pursing a career in this field.

    The Ecology and Semiotics of Language Learning: A Sociocultural Perspective (Educational Linguistics) Review

    In this wandering and uneven book, Leo van Lier attempts to lay the foundation for an approach to language and language learning that breaks free of the impoverished computational metaphor (with its inputs, processing, and outputs) prevalent in much of cognitivist-inspired second language acquisition research, and offers a view of language that embeds it in human beings' relationships with each other and the world. Context doesn't merely provide a background to language and its learning, it defines and is defined by language. Language is not an object 'out there,' accumulated in bits and pieces according to a pre-set internal syllabus, but emerges in a unique way in each learner. The classroom is a partially chaotic, unpredictable social ecosystem subject to multiple influences and not genuinely researchable using the methods of natural science that require data reduction, context reduction, and complexity reduction to yield its results; and learners are whole people, not simply grammar production machines.

    There are some stellar moments in this book, as when van Lier discusses the difference between standards and quality in education (establishing standards does not equal providing a quality education, and may militate against it), and his sowing and reaping metaphor for language education. Van Lier's insights can be stunning at times. However, his style is inconsistent - at times chatty and informal, giving the impression of a professor extemporizing before a class of students - and at others incomprehensively dense, such as the chapter on semiotics, where new concepts come thick and fast, and the reader needs to be familiar already with the writings of writers and philosophers such as Charles Sanders Pierce and Ludwig Wittgenstein in order to benefit. The book is poorly produced (diagrams are bad photocopies on which shading frequently obscures the text); and this is the worst-edited book I have ever read, filled with typos, incorrect page references and chapter headings, and formatting errors - a disappointment considering the price tag and the potential value of van Lier's ideas for those in the field of language teaching. If you can stay with the book though, it is enriching and thought-provoking.

    This is definitely an exceptional book covering most of the basic divisions of modern physics concisely yet in a stunningly deep and insightful fashion. I would never expect, and have never seen that so much of advanced topics could be gathered in a single moderate volume with such a depth. Chapters 1&2, covering the special relativity, is almost a masterpiece in itself. The conciseness does never prevent the authors from conveying to you their deep insight. Almost the same continues in their presentation of; Symmetry and Lie Groups, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, Electromagnetic field and its quantization, which is an early and basic introduction to quantum field theory, Non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics and finally Quantum field theory. General Relativity is given a relatively short and passing touch, yet here also the presentation of the basic equivalence principle is unique. On my part, I have experienced the delight and satisfaction of finding answers to some questions bothered me for long times. Finally, arriving to a basic understanding, albeit at an introductory level, of what quantum field theory is, and why it is needed in the first place, is an exceptional joy in itself. Not a physicist by profession, this is sufficient for me. Others may built on and continue as far as they wish after persevering in the study of this book from start to the end.

    Having covered almost all of foundations of modern physics with full definitions given from the scratch, the authors have created a body of text, which is very coherent in its flow and logic. Thus, in my idea, any one having some maturity in philosophy of science, classical mechanics and electromagnetism, with an introduction to special relativity and quantum mechanics (at an undergraduate level) can, theoretically, tackle this beautiful book; of course with hard work, zeal and perseverance. It is a monograph without any problems and exercises. But this is more than compensated if one fills in the slipped steps in derivations and conclusions reached. Similarly one should think hard on some hints and allusions as well as convince himself about the insightful remarks and judgments, generously presented. I attribute the shortness of references list to the self sufficiency of the book. I have all of the books in this list, but would compare none of them with this one.

    The well-known Jacoby identity for the Poison Brackets, given on page 225 is obviously a typo the correct form of which is already given in Annex D.
