This book describes its subject from the basics of the underlying IP networking technologies (including both TCP and UDP) all the way up through the "traditional" socket classes to the new Channel classes.

Personally I particularly benefitted from the discussion of channels and the rest of the NIO (New IO) package, but I believe that the solid coverage of Java networking basics in tandem with the comprehensive description of the available libraries makes this both a good introductory text and a good reference to the more obscure niches. It helps that while there are quite a few reference tables and lengthy discussion sections this is still a hands-on book with plenty of code examples.

Not quite suitable for a complete Java beginner - but any novice developer with a grip on syntax and the core API would benefit from this.

Foundations of Economic Analysis of Law Review

There is something to be said for compiling a work such as this which covers a wide array of subject matter. The problem with Foundations is not the ambition shown in tackling various topics, but the depth of the analysis he produces. It contains more normative propaganda than thoughtful analysis.

Many of the theoretical examples include numerous "if" statements, but he frequently fails to help the reader consider the outcomes if one or more of the assumptions are relaxed.

In other examples he altogether ignores opportunity cost - one of the most fundamental concepts in economic analysis.

At other times he labels his opinions as facts so as to give his preferred policy prescriptions more weight than they deserve.

This all adds up to a systematic pro-State, anti-market bias in assumptions, examples and analysis. Shavell masterfully does all this in a manner so subtle that it goes unnoticed by most readers. I'm giving the book 1 star not because it is poorly written, but because it is a normative dissertation posing as positive analysis.

I perform so much protein purification and yet i still find this book to be a helpful reference for pointing me in new directions in the lab. although some of the sections are not terribly useful, they describe each major type of chromatography in a reasonable way and also discuss what to do with your protein once it is purified (e.g. mass spec, library screening); again in a way that is understandable!
