Smith's General Urology is written by two absolute giants in the field of Urology in Jack McAninch and Emil Tanagho from UCSF. If you're a urology resident you probably own it just to keep on your shelf. In reality, this is a book aimed at senior medical students or junior residents. The goal of this book is not to be a titrated Campbell's. Also, don't compare it to pocket guide. This book, if you actually read it, is written very well. Sitting down with this book on a rare weekend off, it's really an enjoyable read. No, it doesn't site every source and study like Campbells, but that can get tedious at times. Also, pocket guide to urology is great for an in between case 5 minute refresher, or reading while commuting kinda deal. If you are at home and have ample time, reading a real text book such as Smiths, Campbell's, or even Penn Clinical Manual is much more enjoyable. Note, this book is great for the basics, infections, anatomy, kidney stones, trauma, radiology, history and physical etc. These subjects do not advance at the rate of prostate/renal/bladder cancer, female urology, etc. For current information on these, one really needs to look at the latest literature.

In essence, if you're a senior student or junior resident who wants a good foundation in the basics of urology without getting bogged down by excess citations and detailed intraoperative technique (that you won't be apart of for many years!) then this is a nice little read. If you are, or will be a urology resident, you may as well get it as a testament to the authors and for another book on your shelf to make you look smart.

ABCs of LDAP: How to Install, Run, and Administer LDAP Services Review

At more than 15 to 20 times the price of the cheapest Kindle edition LDAP 'book' available from Amazon.com [when I was looking] this one could be worth it.

As the adage goes, "Ask a German what time it is and he'll tell you how to build a clock." At times Herr Voglmaier can be prone to a superfluous word or two, e.g., when referring to "several different areas." (I can almost hear the late George Carlin protesting that "Of COURSE they're 'different' areas -- If they weren't, they'd be the SAME AREA!") And the labeling of one or more diagrams seems a little rough, at times mixing frames of reference (for most native English speakers and readers, anyway) as when he depicts two directory servers as "UK" and "German." If one were attempting to signify countries, for example, we might have expected "UK" and "Germany;" if denoting language or national/cultural/geopolitical identity, "British" and "German" might seem appropriate.

But these rare lapses are about as much inefficiency as can be found in a relatively graceful presentation which, at times, resembles a "sandwich" or layered approach whereby a high-level overview of a topic is presented first, then later revisited via more complex and/or detailed treatment, and even later by still more detailed and realistic examples. This seems both sound pedagogy and entertaining reading as it seems that more advanced applications of the technologies are timely introduced only after the groundwork has been laid and the reader adequately primed.

Now, I've awarded "five stars" to two LDAP/DIT books in Kindle edition. The least expensive one runs about 501 pages, per the author's own estimate, and offers much information and many concepts for $3.99 USD in a less well written and at times annoyingly more haphazardly edited format than this one. Voglmaier's book appears to have been more carefully edited and thoughtfully organized, and the author seems to maintain a more balanced, more general coverage of the subject, despite offering several sections where the reader can find more precise or arcane information.

Seven appendices provide additional value, including explanations of the more important LDAP-related RFCs, a more comprehensive list covering most -- if not all -- LDAP-related RFCs, a list of the most common object classes, a list of relevant URLs from which to get additional information, etc.

To my surprise, I had breezed through more than 200 of the 414 pages that constitute The ABCs of LDAP in one day of a rainy weekend, almost without stopping. At more than $60.00 for the Kindle edition and more than $80.00 in paperback, this book is probably a little pricey for some readers. I don't doubt that this price can be easily justified for professional developers and administrators. But for casual reading and home computing, probably not so much.

In any case, five stars!

"The Human Genome: A User's Guide" makes cutting-edge topics in genetics easily approachable by students with little background in biology or genetics. The writing style and personal stories work well for people from liberal arts backgrounds (like me) who might not like the impersonal style so often found in science textbooks, and there are many detailed illustrations.

The book starts with a presentation of simple Mendelian inheritance and progresses gradually through more complex forms of inheritance, their underlying molecular basis, and applications of human genomics such as gene mapping, genetic testing and gene therapy. There is information on evolution, regulation of gene expression, the male and female biological clocks, whole genome sequencing, and more.

For those interested in ethics, this topic is addressed in several places, and the book finishes with a discussion of eugenics and policies in scientific education and research that affect how research is done on human subjects.

Structurally, each chapter starts with a Reader's Companion to help students identify up-coming points and includes teaching aids such as study questions, short essays and suggested readings.
