Statistical Mechanics Review

This is a book on statistical mechanics written for physicists. While most books dedicate a chapter or so to the treatment of stat mech. of quantum systems, this book uses the statistics of quantum systems as its foundations. While this means that the reader must possess a very firm grounding in quantum, it does eliminate some 'problems' of stat mech. such as the Gibbs paradox. It also makes some of the derivations simpler because once the quantum version of a phenomenon has been derived, the classical limit generally follows immediately. This book is not an easy read. I found that the equations were not always well motivated in the text. Even so, there are usually references to previous equations that will help in the understanding of whatever the current section is covering. One thing that I really like about this book is that the equations are numbered by sections and only the equations that are referenced in the text are given labels so that you don't wind up with numbering that goes into the hundreds (I realize that this is purely a stylistic point but it makes a difference in the readability in my view). I did have a hard time following the chapters on phase transitions and critical phenomena, but after reading parts of Statistical and Thermal Physics: With Computer Applications, which has a very good treatment of this subject, I was able to come back and understand it a bit better. I also found the chapter on the stat mech. of the early universe quite interesting even if it seemed rather tangential to the rest of the book.

Applied Reliability, Third Edition Review

A book with a very application oriented treatment of reliability, based on electronics industries experience. It uses an advanced style of explanation, i.e. assumes that readers have mastered certain topics/knowledge/techniques in reliability.
However, prerequisites for reading this book must be clearly stated; i.e. what basics are required, are the basics given in the books enough, etc.
Some typos appear in description of table/figure (i.e. table 6.7 written as table 1.7).
Also some computational errors appeared in the answers to selected problems.
These are indeed small errors, however they detract from a good book's image.
Especially for new students in reliability and would-be practicioners, the answers to the problems in the book are very necessary to provide concept/technique mastery and understanding check. Why do not the authors provide answers to ALL problems?
One possible thing to add to the contents is the design of reliability experiments, i.e. the general concepts and some examples drawn from some areas of interest (mechanical, electrical).

Advanced Modelling in Finance using Excel and VBA (The Wiley Finance Series) Review

I like the style of this book. Don't let the small number of pages fool you. The authors didn't get overly wordy explaining the basics of the models (they assume the reader is already a proficient Excel user), and focus instead on explaining the key Excel functions and VBA codes in order to allow the readers to get their own model up and running in a short time. Like the other reviewer said, the authors should be congratulated for such a superb effort. Many subjects are materials not normally covered in a typical MBA curriculum (although they would in a MS program) Examples: in Chapter 13, Non-normal Distributions and Implied Volatility, the authors showed the way to model a Black & Scholes Equity Option using the more realistic non-normal distribution assumptions acounting for skewness and kurtosis (non-symetry and fat tails). In the Appendix, author introduced the ARIMA models in Excel (modeled typically with statistical or time-series software packages, such as SAS or SPSS), splines curve fitting and lastly estimation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors (for estimation of principal components analysis). You will find the Excel/VBA codes bundled in the CD handy for those who wish to develop more advanced models.This book is a godsend for busy practitioners who want to master quickly the art and science of building numerical techniques and coding models with Excel. Although the print copy of this book is an incredibly thorough and detailed reference on biochemistry, the Kindle edition is not adequate for serious research and reference work. The print aspect of the book is fine, but for reasons I do not understand, the definition on the diagrams is unclear. I could not zoom in on the diagrams, and the larger diagrams were poorly defined and too small to read. I definitely recommend against purchase of the Kindle edition of Biochemical Pathways.
