Computational Biology: A Practical Introduction to BioData Processing and Analysis with Linux, MySQL, and R Review

I was very glad to find that Dr. R bbe W�nschiers updated and expanded his 2004 book "Computational Biology" in this excellent 2013 second edition. I purchased the first edition about 5 years ago and refer to it from time to time for my computational work. If you need a comprehensive introduction to Computational Biology, I would heartily recommend this book. The writing style is clear and straightforward (although it is sometimes evident that English is not the author's first language but this lends charm to the reading), sometimes with a bit of humor. The author also offers insightful advice along the way, some of which would take you a lot of time and work to put together on your own (at least, it has for me!). The progression from Unix command line/shell scripts to Sed/Awk to Perl pretty much recaps how to logically approach and develop programming skills. Personally, I find Awk especially useful for file manipulation and use it for my data formatting and parsing huge files. Awk can seem arcane at first as it is so concise. Once you get the hang of it, you will find one line of Awk equals 50-80+ lines of Perl or Python for most simple tasks. For more complicated tasks, Dr. W�nschiers includes a chapter on the rudiments of Perl. There are new chapters in the 2nd edition presenting information about Databases and R statistics packages, topics that move the book forward towards dealing with NGS data. The second edition is further strengthened with biologically meaningful exercises. When you master all the aspects presented in the 2nd edition of "Computational Biology", you will be a guru in your own right (and can get paid those big bioinformatic bucks!).

This is a wonderful book, in a very literal sense. Its 800 pages are full of wonders: beautiful theorems, elegant proofs, and profound theories, placed in an intricate framework of thematic and historical connections.

The central objective of the book is to discuss geometric problems that are easily stated and visualized, but whose solution requires mathematical tools that were created for a different purpose and that lie at higher levels of abstraction. These increasing levels of abstraction are the ``Jacob's ladder'' of the subtitle. Each chapter takes as a point of departure a collection of basic problems in two- and three-dimensional Euclidean geometry. How can K points be distributed on the surface of a sphere so as to maximize the distance between the closest pair? The solution is known for K <= 12 and K=24. What is the trajectory of a ball caroming around a billiard table? It may be periodic or ergodic; it may fill the interior of the table, or only part of the interior; it may fill the space quickly or very slowly; for the three-dimensional problem, almost nothing is known. Given the combinatorial structure of a polytope, can it be instantiated with vertices with integer coordinates, and if so, how large do the integers have to be? In two dimensions, yes, using integers of size O(n^___noise___ 1000); in three dimensions, again yes, but the upper bound is very badly known; in four dimensions, not always, and if it can, the integers may have to be doubly exponential. If you set out from a starting point on a smooth surface following a geodesic, how far can you go before the geodesic ceases to be the unique shortest path from the starting point (the ``cut point'' of the geodesic)? The complete answer is known only for a few special surfaces, such as the sphere and the torus; it is not known for the ellipsoid. Introduction to Network Security (Chapman & Hall/CRC Computer & Information Science Series) Review

This book was alright. I took a class by this professor and used a draft of the final version of this book. The draft had a few inaccuracies, but that's why it was a draft, I would assume the issues are fixed now. The professor does know his stuff, but you should note that is is an introduction to network and general security. If your new to security and you want to learn a good "taxonomy" for network attacks then this is a good place to start, but I've seen better books on security. There are not many real world examples in this book because it is an introduction and it is assumed the skill set is not there yet, also because real world attacks change very quickly. The assignments recommended in this book are good and the accompanying code on the website is a good starter for getting interested in network security. However if you have any sort of network security experience already I would recommend diving into other books instead.
