Remember Conway's Game of Life? Surely you must, if you are interested in this book. The Game has been around since the 70s. The editors have cultivated recent research papers that demonstrate how far the field has advanced. Reinforced by some pretty colour plates that depict artificial entities [dare we call them living?] in some surroundings. These include the modelling of bee flights through a garden, and simulated trajectories of a group of bacteria.

Nor is the Game of Life ignored. One plate shows it in three dimensions. The Game is played in 2 dimensions, with time as the third dimension. An obvious choice that gives interesting trajectories of the cells.

The narrative adds to the illustrations. By describing a variety of computer simulations [worlds?]. Where the experimenter can tweak many parameters, and watch her world unfold. Some worlds are impressively rich in complexity of observed behaviours.

The only drawback in the book is its skimpy index. A mere two pages. It should have been more detailed.

Undocumented Secrets of MATLAB-Java Programming Review

I've followed Yair's blog and CSSM submissions for some time now, and he clearly knows a lot about MATLAB's use of Java. I purchased this book because like many users, I am often frustrated that MATLAB graphical interfaces look archaic. After reading the book, I am not convinced that the solutions provided will continue working in future releases of MATLAB. One can be angry with the Mathworks for failing to fully support/document useful features (such as uitab), but I can't spend time tracking down bugs in unsupported functions. I keep my MATLAB subscription current to maintain support of an established code base; if I wanted to hack into the nether regions of the graphical interface, I'd write my programs in Python. In the end, the suggestions in this book are too fixated on controlling minor aspects of *how* an interface should work, while I need to stay focused on what that interface should *do*.

Springer has made a name for itself with books that appeal to both academics and professionals with a little academic edge. This book is no exception. It provides a very precise and thorough treatment of event-driven systems. If you are afraid of Greek letters this is probably not for you - Chapter 2 "Basics" uses temporal logic to define the precise semantics of event-based systems. On the other hand you gain in-depth insights into some of the design challenges and options when implementing your own event-driven system.

It requires only a typical calculus sequence as a prerequisite and does not assume any familiarity with linear algebra or complex numbers.

A First Course in Abstract Algebra Review

This book worked amazingly well for me for an Intro to Proofs/ Abstract Algebra I course. I think the professor had a lot more to do with it than the book, but it was still very useful - perhaps one of the best classes I've taken. It provides a good introduction to the material as well as ample problems for practice at the end of each chapter. Very few people could learn this material with this book alone, but it's a great book for a university class.
