In Monastic Bodies, Caroline Schroeder offers an in-depth examination of the asceticism practiced at the White Monastery using diverse sources, including monastic rules, theological treatises, sermons, and material culture. Monastic Bodies (Divinations: Rereading Late Ancient Religion) Review

This is a welcome and well-written study of an important figure in the history of monasticism who remains practically unknown outside the Coptic church. So far as he is treated in western literature, Shenoute has come to be seen as a harsh authoritarian, laying on the lash within his monastery and doing pitched battle with pagans outside it. Schroeder reveals another side of the man, one founded on an ideology developed in his own writings.

This is not a comprehensive biography, but it is of broader interest than the only other major work, Rebecca Krawiec's Shenoute and the Women of the White Monastery. As Schroeder herself points out, her book is only a first step in scholarship on this interesting figure, whose brand of monasticism proved to be a dead end but who nonetheless played a major role in stamping out freedom of thought in late antiquity.

I've been working with the Nokia Appliances and the IPSO OS, since they were first released. These boxes loaded with Check Point FW-1 provide top notch security. There are lots of CP books out there, and I was surprised that there wasn't a Nokia book also. I ordered this right when it came out, and the book has been a huge help to me. Its well written, comprehensive, and concise. The UNIX appendx at the end is very good, becaue you dont need to be a UNIX guru, but you do need to know the basics if you have to go beyond Voyager and get into the command line stuff.

My complaint is that the used book I bought had coffee stains through the first 5 chapters. I guess torts of a personal nature (chapter 5) put the prior owner to sleep. I hope that was coffee&#8230;.it could have made them sick.
