Product Description

Focusing on an integral part of pharmaceutical development, Sample Size Calculations in Clinical Research, Second Edition presents statistical procedures for performing sample size calculations during various phases of clinical research and development. It provides sample size formulas and procedures for testing equality, noninferiority/superiority, and equivalence. A comprehensive and unified presentation of statistical concepts and practical applications, this book highlights the interactions between clinicians and biostatisticians, includes a well-balanced summary of current and emerging clinical issues, and explores recently developed statistical methodologies for sample size calculation. Whenever possible, each chapter provides a brief history or background, regulatory requirements, statistical designs and methods for data analysis, real-world examples, future research developments, and related references. One of the few books to systematically summarize clinical research procedures, this edition contains new chapters that focus on three key areas of this field. Incorporating the material of this book in your work will help ensure the validity and, ultimately, the success of your clinical studies.

Sample Size Calculations in Clinical Research, Second Edition (Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series) Review

This is the second edition of a very popular book on sample size estimation that is a valuable reference for any statistician in the industry. we all need to go through such expercises at the beginning of a trial as part of the protocol development.

One disappointment I have with the book is that it does not delineate new topics and other changes/additions from the first edition. Often this is covered by having two Prefaces, the original one from the first edition and a new one from the second edition. The authors unfortunately did not choose to do that. So an owner of the first edition would have to scan through both books to identify the changes.

Another disappointment is the lack of reference to any existing software to do sample size estimation and these days there are a lot of products available. The programs nQuery Advisor and Power and Precision handle equivalence, superiority and noninferiority problems for continuous data. They also provide approximate and exact methods for binomial data. Other packages such as StatXact handle sample size estimation for exact binomial tests as well as for Fisher's Exact test. PASS, S+SeqTrial and East are packages that provide the designs and sample size stopping rules for group sequential procedures and in some cases adaptive designs. Also with the development of version 9 of SAS comes the new procedures power and glmpower that do everything that nQuery can handle.

The value of the book is that it develops the methodology and therefore helps with the understanding of how and when to use the various procedures. Traditional tables that use to be important for sample size calculations are now obsolete given the availability of good software tools. Although the book goes to great lengths to cover almost any application. Most of these applications can be handled these days through the available software packages.

I can definitely recommend this book as a fine reference on sample size estimation for the wide range of trial applications. I would only try to encourage the authors to drop the use of tables and get up to date by recommending the appropriate software for the various applications.

This book provides a concise, unified presentation of adaptive design theories, uses SAS and R for the design and simulation of adaptive trials, and illustrates how to master different adaptive designs through real-world examples. It emphasizes the relationships among different methods; presents current regulatory views; discusses the challenges in planning, executing, analyzing, and reporting adaptive designs; and features Bayesian decision theory to optimize adaptive designs and programs. The author also explores controversial issues surrounding statistical theories as well as fruitful avenues for future research and applications of adaptive designs.

Adaptive Design Theory and Implementation Using SAS and R (Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series) Review

This book just came out but I know a lot about it and about the author before I even got a copy. In November of last year Mark Chang coauthored a book in this Chapman and Hall series that I reviewed with praise because of the importance of the topic and the way it was demonstrated to work in a variety of real problems in pharmaceutical clinical trials. This book is even better as it goes more deeply into the methodology, the controversies and the results from simulation studies. Also it is much more practical because for every case where an application is given a SAS macro is also included to allow the reader to try the methodology for himself. In March of 2007 I actually designed a two-stage adaptive design with sample size reestimation for bioequivalence trials. I met mark at a conference where he presented much of his recent work and he was instrumental in helping me through his first book and his journal articles. This book had already gone to the publisher but he realized that this important design had overlooked. He added it when the copyedited version came to him. The design and the simulations related to it are very close to what I actually used. For those who like to program in R, he provides R code corresponding to each of the SAS macros that he gave. These programs make the new methodology readily available to interested users. The book is very comprehensive in that it covers a wide variety of applications for phase 2, phase 3 and combined phase trials. With the FDAs new initiative to speed up the drug discovery process this book will be an invaluable tool to statisticians in the pharmaceutical industry who would like to learn and apply these methods that along with the group sequential methodsare gaining favor within the FDA.

Phase Locked Loops 6/e : Design, Simulation, and Applications Review

This book is certainly worth owning. It is 1 of 7 PLL books that I own. I use it as a reference for the basic PLL linearized transfer functions even after I found that the transfer function for the 2nd order PLL with ideal integrator is incorrect.

Best covers analog PLLs with each block replaced by a digital implementation based on the incremental improvements made in standard TTL implementations of PLLs offered over the decades. This allows the reader to fully understand each digital block and the PLL in a way that is excellent for an introductory text.

The digital PLL is a numerical implementation of each PLL function, which has by definition an analog function. One way to implement such a numerical PLL is via replacing each analog function with the equivalent numerical function, without much focus on the Z domain and digital signal processing (DSP) concepts. That is what this book does. Look elsewhere for a book with heavy use of Z domain math (consider the Kluwer Acedemic Press Book 'Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications: Analog and Digital' by Stephen (?) for more DSP math.

Best's approach is viable. I have personally designed a leading edge all-digital PLL, adding patent pending analog enhancements, and can asure the reader that straight-forward DSP approaches do not lead to the optimal designs, at least at the high data rates. Understanding of the PLL in analog form, and then adding the digital analogues is an excellent way to go. Best's book is surprisingly very different from Wolaver's book, almost orthogonal; start with Wolaver, then add Best if adding digital gates step by step to an analog PLL is of interest to you (it was to me).

Product Description

Distills complex theories for the benefit of the average trader with little or no background in finance or mathematics by offering a wide range of valuable, practical strategies for limiting risk, avoiding catastrophic losses and managing the futures portfolio to maximize profits. Numerous topics are explored including: why most traders lose at the futures game most of the time; why most mechanical trading systems are apt to fail; the probabilistic approach to trading; how to make stop-loss orders work for, rather than against you; the pros and cons of options versus futures trading; and how to limit risk through diversification.

Money Management Strategies for Futures Traders (Wiley Finance) Review

This book was released in 1992 -- and is still as essential today to traders as it was 16 years ago. It seems like it is a secret gem of a book since there are only 2 Amazon.com reviews posted (both of which are five and four stars) in all these years.

Maybe it's time for this classic to be re-discovered by a new generation of traders and investors. Surprising to me that the book "The Trading Game - Playing by the Numbers to Make Millions" sells so many books. The gimmick title "...Make Millions..." should make you wonder if it is authentic -- get Professor Balsara's book instead and learn the true principles of managing and understanding your risk.

There is a reason Balsara's book is cited by 34 other books (most of which are written by the master traders of our time) and it is because this is the textbook that the master traders refer to in creating their money management strategies. This book has the formulas and the theory you need to manage your risk and avoid the risk-of-ruin.

I found out about Balsara's book from Bennett McDowell, he recommends Balsara's book in his book "A Trader's Money Management System":

A Trader's Money Management System: How to Ensure Profit and Avoid the Risk of Ruin (Wiley Trading)

McDowell encourages his students to use Balsara's risk-of-ruin tables when designing their own personal money management system. It improves your bottom line when you calculate your current payoff ratio and win ratio and accurately determine the risk you should be taking on each trade by referring to the risk-of-ruin tables. Balsara also covers Optimal F in detail, which is another way to determine the amount to risk on any one trade based on your current payoff ratio and win ratio.

Of course, another great author on this topic is Ralph Vince and his latest book is probably the most thorough account of using Optimal F effectivly:

The Handbook of Portfolio Mathematics: Formulas for Optimal Allocation & Leverage (Wiley Trading)

For some traders they should risk 2% of their trading capital on each trade. For other more experienced traders they can benefit by risking 10%. The key is to do the calculations and know where you stand at any given moment.

Do yourself a favor, buy Balsara's book, Vince's book and/or McDowell's book instead of "The Trading Game".
