Quantitative Measurements for Logistics (McGraw-Hill Sole Press) Review

Quantitative Measurements for Logistics evolved from my desk notes collected from over 25 years working in military logistics. I found that I had to relearn how to perform basic logistics calculations whenever I used them. During my Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) study, there was no single source for all of the logistics mathematics that would be on the exam. I took those desk notes and typed them into the PC to consolidate and format them. After sharing my efforts with co-workers, it became apparent that others also had a need for the information.

This book is intended to be used as a desk top reference. It is not a textbook by itself but is a good supplement to other logistics textbooks; especially those within the McGraw-Hill / SOLE press. In addition to the mathematical formulas, acronyms and definitions of many commonly found logistics terms were included.

QML is for both business and military logisticans. The major differences between the two is that while business logisticians generally know what products they need to move, the military logistics engineer spends a great deal of time determining what items need to be moved in order to support the warfighter. Most of the formulas in this book may be applied to both groups of logisticians.

QML is an indispensable reference on my desk. I hope that other logisticians and students of logistics and supply chain management also find that it is of benefit to them. My goal in publishing this information was to share my knowledge and experience with other logisticians. The Cat: Its Behavior, Nutrition and Health Review

I am an ailourophile that is in the field working with cats every day. This is one of the best books (maybe the best?) I have ever come across about feline natural history, health and behavior. I am only about 1/3 of the way through, but I am always looking for a chance to sit down and read another chapter. This book is well-researched, well-written, and extremely relevant to those in the veterinary field, feline rescue and welfare, and owners, alike. I so appreciate being able to go to a single source for such a wide-variety of topics. For those who consider themselves more 'lay readers', this is a book from Blackwell and so the topics are explored pretty in-depth. I cannot afford to subscribe to the relevant journals so I love that the author here has done the research and compiled what is currently known into user-friendly chunks. If you are passionate about cats and have an above-average interest in their biology and genetics, you will appreciate this book. if you want a compendium about all the feline breeds, though, this is not the best resource. The author can only touch upon those that have the most relevance due to popularity, history, or those of particular medical or behavioral interest.

I read this book for a class with Sweeney at TEDS, and it is VERY enlightening! Regardless of your opinion on the state of theology in the 19th century, you will be definitely challenged and edified by this work. Five stars.

Flora Novae Angliae - A Manual for the Identification of Native and Naturalized Higher Vascular Plants of New England by Arthur Haines, 2011, is a welcome addition to any ones botanical library. This publication covers the states of Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine.

This manual provides dichotomous keys for each genus, lists some common synonyms, and identifies the states in which the plant has been observed. This is followed by a brief description of the community type in which it grows.

Arthur Haines also presents a listing of the various species with which a plant may hybridize. This is especially useful when identifying the ferns, willows, sedges and oak trees. He describes the main characters which are used to identify the hybrids.

Most pages have additional line drawings along the sides, which highlight a feature which is useful to separate out similar species. It would have been nice if more of these could have been included for comparison to other species in the same genus.

A welcome feature is the updated nomenclature, which is in line with many botanical databases found on the internet. This is a worthwhile addition to any naturalist library.
