Modeling Business Objects with XML Schema (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Software Engineering and Programming) Review

This is the best book out there on XML. If you want an intro to XML get Mark Johnson's article "XML for the Absolute Beginner." If you want to go in depth, this is the place to go.Unlike the hundreds of other books that just describe what XML and XML Schema are, Daum's book gets deeply into why it is the way it is, by exploring how it fits in with conceptual modeling and how you would fit it into a complex environment. He introduces a beguiling simple example domain (jazz musicians) which he revisits over and over again throughout the book. Through this simple example he works out subtle differences in different approaches to modeling, to schema construction, to constaint definition and modeling and finally how would you map this back to Object or Relational technology. He introduces Asset Oriented Modeling, which is a form of conceptual modeling more attuned to XML schema model creation. His treatement of polymorphism in Schema, and techniques for evolving schema are as good as I've seen anywhere. Excellent treatment of constraints, both conceptually as well as practical approaches to realizing the constraints in XPath or XSLT. These were worth the price of the book by themselves. It's probably too late, but if you get no other book on XML and XML Schemas, this is the one to get. Sustainable Enterprise Architecture Review

This book is not worth the cover price. If it were under five bucks, perhaps (perhaps!) I'd keep it. As it is, I am sending this book back.

The book reads like a dictionary of IT terms with no attempt to unify them into something that makes sense as a solution. For example, there's a short blurb on what Twitter is and about a page of what a wiki is. This is information that anybody can find using Google or any search engine.

Oh, and guess what... this book has no bibliography. Did the author really come up with all of this on his own? I think not. Well, come to think of it, maybe. After all, it doesn't seem to have any substance to it.

Ever wonder why some books here on Amazon don't have have a preview mode where you can look in for a sample, or have a Kindle version? I did. And now I know. What a waste of time.

I like Enderton's style, which is why I purchased his Computability text, but as it is a first edition, there are MANY mistakes in the text that I have seen so far and I am only on the second chapter. This text is an excellent, in-depth systems approach to achieving a carbon-free energy supply. There is also useful supplementary material on the web - presentations, spreadsheets, and a climate-carbon tutorial. It's a wonderfully rapid review of each energy source. If used in an undergraduate class the teacher might want to designate sections of the longer chapters. For an undergrad reader such as myself the text has an accessible analytic narrative, considers climate and resource constraints, and celebrates a science-based understanding of energy systems. I found it a challenging yet very satisfying text.
