Dynamics AX: A Guide to Microsoft Axapta Review

At first glance the book looks very impressive and promising; however you don't have to read many pages before the cold truth of the authors' dilemma hits you. Covering a product as huge as Axapta in less than 500 pages is impossible, so choosing the right level of detail is vital. The authors chose the same approach as the online documentation shipping with the product. They describe in a clear and easy digestible language the most important forms in great detail. The online documentation has rightfully been accused of not providing procedural information (Step-by-step descriptions of how to accomplish tasks spanning multiple forms) or overview information (How everything ties together). Unfortunately this book does not provide that information either. Since the page count is limited one could have hoped non-trivial information was prioritized. That isn't the case. This book is however more than just a rewrite of the online documentation. It contains many valuable and interesting insights where appropriate. Don't expect this book to give you a lot of new information; but it gives you the opportunity to bring it all to the beach.

The content in the book is fairly accurate, and fairly complete. If you are new to Axapta it will help you, if you already are somewhat familiar with the product, the technical inaccuracies and missing key information may throw you off track. An example of missing key information is in the X++ chapter. Here both transaction and exception handling are well described in sequent subchapters. However not a word is mentioned on how they interact, which is something every X++ developer needs to understand to write business logic. Hopefully this and many similar issues will be ironed out in a revised edition.

The architecture chapter is quite a disappointment to me, as it mostly describes deployment scenarios and lists the files that come with the product. The chapters on development and X++ will not teach you to be an Axapta developer. Just like reading a car's manual won't teach you how to drive. In the book there are no examples of business code, but a lot of screenshots and descriptions of the MorphX toolbox. The structure and contents of the development chapters makes me wonder if the authors ever used MorphX themselves.

The book has an edge towards Microsoft, which at times is mind-opening, but mostly plain ignorant. At times it seems more focused on finding ways to crash the system, than ways to successfully avoid the crashes.

By the way: Don't be tricked by the book's title. The book is about Axapta version 3.0 released in 2002. "Dynamics AX" is the name of version 4.0 scheduled to release in 2006.

CISA Certified Information Systems Auditor All-in-One Exam Guide Review

I got this book in addition to the ISACA CBK for the CISA exam. Of the two, I definitely preferred this one, as it's a very nice easy to read manual that compliments the ISACA CISA exam guide. As with any situation where you have two different authors writing about the same subject, you'll find that there are areas where one book goes into more depth than another. That's the case here, although it's not nearly as bad as with ISC2's CBK for the CISSP and the CISSP All-in-One.

I had to take away one star since the format of the book is not consistent throughout (some chapters have a summary and then points of interest, in other chapters this is reversed, and in some one or the other are missing). I also had an issue with the lack of questions in the book itself. Considering the size of each chapter, there's no reason to limit yourself to 10 questions per chapter (this is especially true for chapters 5 and 6, which run 100+ pages).

I did rely on this book heavily for the CISA exam, and while I do not know whether or not I passed as of yet, I did find the exam to be easier to me than the CISSP. This book was a big part of that.

Product Description

Enterprise Java for SAP is designed as an introduction to the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) for the SAP developer. After providing a general introduction to Java, author Austin Sincock explores how to open the typically closed SAP environment to the world of Java.

Utilizing SAP's Java connector, JCo, Sincock details an end-to-end web application that connects directly to SAP, including the deployment and implementation of both a web server and an external database. He explores communicating with an SAP environment through such Java and J2EE technologies as JavaServer Pages (JSP) and the Java Standard Tag Library, and database connectivity through JDBC.

Wherever possible, open-source technologies are employed to enable flexible Java connectivity to SAP atypical for the SAP environment, in which tools are often proprietary.

Enterprise Java for SAP (Books for Professionals by Professionals) Review

I am the author of Enterprise Java for SAP and would like to clarify a few points about the text. I have noticed that several reviewers were dissatisfied with the book due to the introductory treatment of Java and JCo. I would like to stress to all current and potential readers that this is a book written for the SAP developer, specifically someone well-versed in ABAP but who has had little to no exposure to Java programming.

The world of SAP development tends to be somewhat insular, with the bulk of commonly used tools provided explicitly within the SAP suite (ABAP Workbench, Menu Painter, Screen Painter, etc.). In my experience, many strict SAP developers have never been exposed to open source development technologies and struggle to gain entry into that world. The specific "open source" focus of this book is intended to demonstrate how these technologies can be used within an SAP environment.

If you are an SAP developer with an interest in broadening your development skills, I would definitely recommend checking out my book. If you are an experienced Java developer looking for an SAP JCo reference, I would pass on this book and check out the various articles and postings available on the Web. A good place to start is SearchSAP.com, where I have posted a number of articles and expert advice on the targeted use of connecting Java applications to SAP via SAP's Java connector, JCo. I also welcome questions/comments via email at austin at opensourceguru dot com.

Product Description

A handbook and reference for academic econometricians and advanced graduate students. The book provides a coherent account of recent contributions to limit theory, with particular emphasis on the issues of date dependence and heterogeneity. It also provides a grounding in the requisite mathematics and probability theory, which will allow readers with limited mathematical training to make use of the material. - ;This is a survey of the recent developments in the rapidly expanding field of asymptotic distribution theory, with a special emphasis on the problems of time dependence and heterogeneity.

The book is designed to be useful on two levels. First as a textbook and reference work, giving definitions of the relevant mathematical concepts, statements, and proofs of the important results from the probability literature, and numerous examples; and second, as an account of recent work in the field of particular interest to econometricians, including a number of important new results. It is virtually self-contained, with all but the most basic technical prerequisites being explained in
their context; mathematical topics include measure theory, integration, metric spaces, and topology, with applications to random variables, and an extended treatment of conditional probability. Other subjects treated include: stochastic processes, mixing processes, martingales, mixingales, and
near-epoch dependence; the weak and strong laws of large numbers; weak convergence; and central limit theorems for nonstationary and dependent processes. The functional central limit theorem and its ramifications are covered in detail, including an account of the theoretical underpinnings (the weak convergence of measures on metric spaces), Brownian motion, the multivariate invariance principle, and convergence to stochastic integrals. This material is of special relevance to the theory of
cointegration. -

Stochastic Limit Theory: An Introduction for Econometricians (Advanced Tets in Econometrics) Review

Yes, I know it's a standard game of reviewers to show off by describing books as "a good introduction", implying one's capability of easily absorbing the material.

I shall try to judge the book by its stated mission, viz. to be an "introduction for econometricians". In my view it isn't, the material doesn't resemble much of what you are likely to have encountered in your econometrics education. If anything it is a course in applied measure theory. I should add that I don't know how the original sources look like (e.g. Billingsley), perhaps they're even worse. I just don't see where the book is supposed to be tailored to the background and needs of econometricians (with the exception of convergence to stochastic integrals at the very end, relevant for unit root econometrics etc.). Motivation and relevant examples (e.g. links to econometrics which one might reasonably expect in view of the title) are scarce, or to put it in Davidson's words, they occur on a set with measure zero. The book is thus extremely terse. It's Theorem - Proof - Corollary at its best. The back cover even recommends the book to business econometricians also (whatever that may be). This must be a marketing gag by the publisher, as far as I can judge the business world.

On the other hand it is quite self contained, which means most concepts you need in the later parts of the book are developed (if briefly) in the introductory chapters. Davidson frequently helps you with the task of understanding the proofs (which cover an estimated 2/3 of the book) by referring you to the relevant places.

It is only fair to acknowledge that Davidson does a remarkable job of explaining the material rigorously, but just don't be fooled by the title. It's hard work, you have to spend time on each word and (there is a lot more of that obviously) (in)equality.

Happily, it's worth it. Once you're through this, some of these obscure appendices in Econometrica may at last become more accessible to you. (The converse also holds: if you have never been interested in the details of the proofs save your money.)

This is the second edition of a textbook currently published by Springer for a course in mathematical modeling and computer simulation for biologists at the advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate level. The audience for this edition is similar to that of the previous one: advanced level courses in computational biology, as well as researchers retooling themselves.

</p>

Modeling Biological Systems:: Principles and Applications Review

This book is a complete dissapointment.
It does not offer any real scientific physical models which then can be transformed in an algorithm and being simulated but is is merely a conglomerate of several statistical procedures commonly used in Biology for interpreting data (maybe copied by the author and collected from other books, as nothing that he presents is new!). This book does not offer any scientific, fundamental insight in how to really model and simulate properly complex biological systems, it is also written in a very unscientific, popular style. The mathematical level corresponds to High-School and as the author says in the preface: "The process of modeling biological systems is certainly not a science, but neither is it as unconstrained as the creation of a work of pure art that is evaluated solely on its esthetic content". I think that nonsense speaks for itself. This author should rather write novels instead of cobbling something together that gets the label "scientific" on the cover.
The book is not trash, the author does have collected some of the simplest "models" there are to describe collections of data in statistical terms, but this has NOTHING to do with proper scientific numerical and mathematical modeling and even less with scientific Computing in the field of biological complex systems, e.g. how to simulate membranes, proteins using Quantum Chemistry or Molecular dynamics techniques.

All in all I judge this book as a complete waste of money and as completely superfluous.

Product Description

'No reality please. We're economists'. There is a wide spread belief that modern economics is irrelevant to the understanding of the real world. In a controversial and original study, Tony Lawson argues that the root of this irrelevance is in the failure of economists to find methods and tools which are appropriate for the social world it addresses.
Supporting his argument with a wide range of examples, Tony Lawson offers a provocative account of why economics has gone wrong and how it can be put back on track.

Economics and Reality (Economics as Social Theory) Review

For me the book is very good. I do not take it as a show-off of erudition but as a thorough explanation of why recognition of subject and context matter if we are to address problems more meaningfully. The authors goes into indicating a `broad criteria and strategy', as giving a recipe is not consistent with critical realism, the philosophy of social science proposed as appropriate to move on to leaving a traditional lack of sense in much economic research.
