Engineering Dynamics: A Comprehensive Introduction Review

There are many great books on Engineering Dynamics out there and this book is one of them. However, what really sets this book apart from others is its unique and unorthodox approach in helping students to learn engineering dynamics. This author addresses the 2 most important components in learning this subject - Physics and Mathematics. Each one is treated separately and from the ground up starting with qualitative definition of dynamics concepts followed by basic mechanics with some problem solving at very early stages before delving more in-depth into Newton's laws where their meanings are explained to enable students to realize the advantages and pitfalls in using Newtonian and how they can be complemented by Lagrangian method. Basics like reference frames, velocity and vectors and physics of motions are all consolidated in early chapters and given the utmost treatments by the author instead of breaking them up as introduction in individual topics. This way, students are able to build a concrete foundation to prepare them for more advanced discussions. Equipped with these basics, students are able to understand that solving problems in motions is about finding equations to predict their trajectories rather than giving those formulations to students without requiring them to understand the underlying principles. The rest of the chapters are very similar to other texts covering particle dynamics, motion of multiparticle system, rigid body dynamics and so on. We see close overlaps between the Christian theologians' arguments about the charging of interest on loans and deposits and many current Islamic thoughts.

Also, the book educates the reader in the sometimes wide differences between different Muslim thinkers and countries about what constitutes acceptable alternatives to interest. The author hails from Iran and offers his interpretation, which perhaps could be construed as that accepted in Iran. Plus, it is written with very little background in the world of electron microscopy. Too many authors to list but it's wonderful that alot of experts got together to present this material in clear, concise manner. Before you grab your solid-state physics book or check Wikipedia, just relax and page through it since this book pretty much makes it easy for you.

Chapters are arranged by the following: What is SEM?, How SEM works?, and Why are we interested with SEM? That's the easiest way to explain rather than list all the chapters. If you have a specific question, you don't even have to read through the previous chapters (if you have rough understanding). The size of this book is a BIG PLUS. It's compact compared to the monsterous Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) book by Barry Carter which is another great reference. For this price, you would be lucky to find another good reference book under $100 with such relevant information.

Sustainable Thermal Storage Systems Planning Design and Operations Review

To preface, I've been working in sales for a tank manufacturer for the past year and welded steel chilled water thermal energy storage (TES) tanks are one of the products I focus on. This made me very familiar with much of the content, but new to several chapters as well.

I found this text by Lucas Hyman to be a refreshingly quick read for technical literature. The content is very thorough and exceptionally organized. Almost every chapter can stand on its own (which makes for some redundancy), but allows for quick and easy reference. The chapters progress from the origins of thermal storage and close out with case studies in the final couple of chapters, which really help tie everything together.

If you're new to TES, this book is an excellent way to build some basic knowledge. If you're experienced with TES, this book is a great reference to have on your shelf. I would recommend owning a copy either way.

I found the text poorly written: Repetitious; overly general on basic trade methodology; then not enough specifics regarding pairs trading. Math formulas were given without sufficient explanation or application, as if the author was just filling space with them (and the fonts used for the math was amateurish and not up to math text typographic standards -- in some cases even making them difficult to read). I was quite shocked at the overall low quality of the book. John Wiley trade texts are often of uneven quality I'm finding, even though the publishing house is thought to have a good reputation.

Financial Modelling With Jump Processes (Chapman & Hall/CRC Financial Mathematics Series) Review

A book dealing comprehensively with discontinuous asset prices has long been overdue. This is a first attempt to fill the gap in a manner both rigorous and accessible. The reason why it has taken so long for a book of this kind to appear is that price jumps give rise to a host of issues that are simply not present in continuous models such as Black-Scholes. The authors tackle most of them admirably. The book also contains valuable comprehensive bibliography.

Every pioneer can make a mistake. The authors do not shy away from very complicated questions, such as (locally) optimal hedging in the presence of jumps. I'm afraid they haven't done their homework properly in this case. They claim on page 339 "the minimal martingale measure preserves orthogonality", which happens to be true for continuous price processes but it is false in most models with jumps. Pages 340 and 341 go on to compute the locally risk minimizing hedging coefficients based on the false premise. I hope this can be fixed in the next edition.
