Spine Disorders Review

This is the best book I have read regarding the medical and surgical treatment of spine problems for the non-surgical health care provider. This book grew out of a course provided by the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology. It describes the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the spine and how to evaluate clinically and with laboratory and imaging studies the patient with disease affecting the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine levels.

The introductory chapter provides beautiful, pertinent illustrations regarding anatomy to better understand the pathophysiology of the spine. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 are the best textbook descriptions that I have read on getting a pertinent history and neurologic exam on a patient with a spinal disorder. The differential diagnoses are outstanding.

The chapters on spinal imaging have good illustrations and are very easily followed.

Chapter 7 is an outstanding chapter on why many patients continue with symptoms despite surgery. This chapter is important because many non-surgeons are left to take care of chronic pain patients.

Chapters 9, 10, and 11 on preoperative assessment and surgical management are outstanding chapters filled with clinical pearls such as differentiating cervical myelopathy from ALS, or vascular claudication from neurogenic claudication. I have never read a book with this much pertinent clinical information. These pearls should be known by anyone who treats patients with spinal disorders. This chapter also tells the various complications that can occur with spinal surgery. The last couple of chapters summarize well newer technology available in spinal surgery.

I particularly enjoyed the appendix section titled "Please Don't Make My Mistakes" which is an honest look at various ways of being mislead down the wrong path in treating patients with spinal disorders.

Being a neurosurgeon, I see so many patients that have had operations on asymptomatic spinal disease which is one of the major reasons that many spinal surgery patients do poorly. If a surgeon can identify the symptomatic lesion and deal with it in the appropriate manner the patient will do well. This book is the best book I have found that can help a surgeon listen to and examine a patient and determine what lesions are symptomatic and which lesions are silent.

Some day this book may well be as much of a classic for treatment of spinal disorders as "Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen" is for a general surgeon. This well-written book is filled with pertinent information for diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders. It was written for non-surgeons such as family physicians, internists, physical therapists, chiropractors, physiatrists, and pain management doctors; however, in this day when an MRI shows every little crack and cranny of the spine, even neurosurgeons and orthopaedic spine surgeons would benefit by reading this to help determine symptomatic versus asymptomatic pathology and nonsurgical neurologic diseases masquerading as a spinal disorder.

Statistical Genetics Review

I have encountered difficulty to rate this book firstly because there are very limited resources published under the same title. I recommend this book for people who are interested in quantitative genetics and linkage mapping. This is one of the very few books about the topic. the book is written in a very clear language and could be helpful for biologists and agriculturists who are interested in linkage mapping (at least basics). The fist few chapters are based on high school algebra but the rest might require some knowledge, even comprehensive background in statistics but I swear its simpler than many other statistical genetics book.

It is a must for anybody teaching or learning (excluding advanced researchers) association mapping and linkage, I believe. Its one of the most functional book written in this field.

The problem is simplely stated: How do you find the shortest path for a travelling sales_____ to drive as he visits a series of customers.

If you're just running a few errands it's easy enough. If you're going to the supermarket, the post office, the dry cleaners, and the gas station, it's pretty easy to determine the shortest path. But then you add constraints, nearly out of gas, go to gas station first. Buying ice cream at the super market, better make it the last stop.

Although the general format of Stress Testing has not been changed in the Fifth Edition, the chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated. "Take Home" messages are sprinkled throughout the book to emphasize major concepts. The chapter on electrocardiographic changes has been completely re-organized to highlight the importance of unconventional markers of ischemia. Two new chapters cover the role of exercise echocardiography and exercise testing in congestive heart failure.
Overall, Stress Testing, Fifth Edition, remains an essential resource for cardiologists and exercise physiologists.

Literally every sentence of this book is filled with grammatical and spelling errors. It does get quite annoying at times to read through the text.The illustrations and diagrams are of poor quality. I bought this book as the author is quite renowned in the field of stress stesting. I think it would have been a great book if only someone had taken the time to proof read and edit the text before publishing it.

Some background is required before proceeding with a detailed review of this book. First, this book addresses a topic that occupies IT managers and corporate executives - how to demonstrate the value it IT to the business. Second, there are numerous approaches used in most large enterprises (and more than a few medium ones). They all seem to begin with the goal of aligning IT to business operations and show value, but too many end up either using a chargeback scheme of some sort, or IT finds itself outsourced. Third, there are viable approaches that look good on paper. An example is the bullet-proof approach set forth in "Effective Measurement and Management of It Costs and Benefits" (ISBN 0750624329), which--if followed--would solve many of the problems of making IT a value-driven organization. From personal experience, though, I've found that the leadership and commitment needed to implement what that book outlines is lacking in too many IT organizations. This book takes a less ambitious approach than "Effective Measurement and Management of It Costs and Benefits"; however, it is an approach that is within the capabilities of competent IT executives who have reasonable leadership skills. At the heart of the approach is how to turn IT into an organization that has proven value to the business it supports. This is where the book gets interesting and the author's knowledge and experience is imparted. He thoroughly dissects typical approaches, such as making IT a profit center (and reasons why this will not work), and various common funding schemes (transfer charging using either market pricing or cost recovery), and how they affect both actual and perceived value.The in-depth discussions of the charging schemes, their strengths and weaknesses related to the goal of managing IT as a value-providing organization were an education in themselves. I also like how this book stays focused on the theme and does not get sidetracked with discussions on operational or process improvement models, which are mentioned only in the context of the book's objectives.What makes this book so valuable is the straightforward approach and how the author leads you to it. It is both workable and realistic, which is a refreshing change from many books about IT-business alignment and IT value. Regardless of whether you are seeking a workable solution of transforming IT into a service that has measurable value, or are a consultant who specializes in IT organizational and operational optimization, this book will provide you with knowledge and an actionable approach. Do note that this book addresses value from organizational and operational perspectives.
