Whoever wrote this was either paid to spread filthy leftist propaganda or has no knowledge or understanding of history except that which was hammered into his brain by whatever marxist alma mater brainwashing machine he came out of.

Ku Klux Clan is a right-wing group? Mr. Atkins, the Ku Klux Clan was created by the Democratic Party. Historian Eric Foner wrote in 1898, "In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic party, the planter class, and all those who desired restoration of white supremacy. Its purposes were political, but political in the broadest sense, for it sought to affect power relations, both public and private, throughout Southern society. It aimed to reverse the interlocking changes sweeping over the South during Reconstruction: to destroy the Republican party's infrastructure, undermine the Reconstruction state, reestablish control of the black labor force, and restore racial subordination in every aspect of Southern life."

The Democratic Party has a long track record of racism and extremism. The Klan was founded by Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Democrat. Woodrow Wilson (a Democrat) segregated Federal Buildings and jobs. The Democrat Party instituted the Jim Crow Laws. It instituted "separate but equal". George Wallace (a Democrat) said "Segregation Forever". Orval Faubus (a Democrat) wanted the AK National Guard to enforce segregation. Bull Connor (a member of the Democrat National Committee) hosed the marchers in Birmingham. Democrats called General Colin Powell a "house n***er", and Condoleeza Rice an "Aunt Jemima", and more recently, they called many African-Americans who dared to criticize Obama despicable, racist names. The man who sent the 101st Airborne to integrate the schools was Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican. Republicans made up the majority that passed the Nineteenth Amendment and the 1964 Civil Rights Act, over the filibuster of Democrats (William Fulbright, Al Gore Sr., and Grand Kleagle Byrd, among others).

I'm not saying there aren't any extremists on the right; there are extremists in all walks of life. But it's certainly not the norm like this book will have you believe. The Westboro Baptist Church is the perfect example, and you know what? They're shunned and despised like the freaks they are by the vast majority of conservatives. If you really care about exposing rabid, widespread extremism, look left. As a Rand-loving libertarian I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place most days, but I value integrity and fairness, and do my best to exercise them. Curiosity has over the course of the years brought me to both liberal and conservative events, and the only extremism and hatred I've seen are coming from the left, especially as of late.

The absurdity of this book can only be matched by its outrageous price. It's a joke in every respect.

Explorations in Computing (Chapman & Hall/CRC Textbooks in Computing) Review

We are using this textbook for our "Computational Thinking" lessons, and this textbook is useful if you want lots of breadth without the depth - exactly what we need for an introductory course in Computer Science. The book uses interactive Ruby to illustrate certain algorithms (e.g. sorting etc) but the author does not assume prior Ruby experience, and has successfully used examples in Ruby to illustrate the concepts without focusing on the programming language.

What's missing that I would have liked to be in the book: (i) more information about algorithmic complexity and (ii) data structures (stacks, queues, trees, graphs). (For our course, we provided supplementary materials for these parts). I find the text easy to read even for someone who has never done a course in CS, and the hands-on exercises in Ruby (or what the author calls "tutorial projects") easy to follow.

This text is not suitable if you are searching for "depth" or more mathematical treatment of CS concepts.

It seems that this book is targeted at candidates preparing to sit for the IEEE WCET certification exam (that's what the "Certified" in "Get Certified" refers to). As such, it overlaps with A Guide to the Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK) and Fundamentals of Wireless Communication Engineering Technologies (Information and Communication Technology Series,). It is not as broad or comprehensive as the WEBOK, and since it is not from IEEE, there's a question about relevant coverage, for certification purposes, as another reviewer raised. Also, it is written by multiple authors, so lacks the overall coherence and unity of "Fundamentals of Wireless Communication Engineering Technologies"
(a book which appears to have some forms of endorsement by IEEE).

Higher Wisdom: Eminent Elders Explore The Continuing Impact Of Psychedelics (S U N Y Series in Transpersonal and Humanistic Psychology) Review

If I were to teach a course about psychedelics, the first book I would have my students read is Higher Wisdom. Edited by Roger Walsh and Charles Grob, this gem of a book provides in-depth interviews with 14 psychedelic luminaries. Collectively, their published books, papers, lectures, and research reports would take up a significant amount of shelf space.

Fortunately for those of us who don't have the time to read through such a treasure trove of information, Grob and Walsh have distilled the pure essence of the work of these elders into a series of remarkable interviews. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to be carried away by this book, because I thought I already knew a lot about almost everyone the editors interviewed. I was wrong. Before I knew it, I lost track of time and was transported back to the days when incredible breakthroughs were being made by these pioneers of consciousness exploration.

Although the interviews are arranged under the general categories of research, psychotherapy, culture & consciousness, and religious implications, I didn't read it front to back. Instead, I began by first reading the interviews of people I knew the best. As I read, I quickly became aware of what a valuable resource I was holding in my hands. Here in a single volume were the "headlines" and best stories of some people whose work will one day be seen as the bedrock of all future psychedelic studies.

Higher Wisdom works on several levels. Psychedelic researchers and explorers may find in it clues to puzzles they have yet to solve. Additionally, it is a work of history that pulls together the stories of a small group of people, largely unknown to most of the world, who made breakthroughs in consciousness research that are for the most part unparalleled today. In addition to the interviews, the editors, along with Gary Bravo, have written several short essays that pull these disparate stories together, placing the work of these eminent elders into a focused historical context. Another useful feature the editors included is an index split in two parts, a Name Index and a Subject Index. While this may seem like a trivial matter, it is a nice touch that many will appreciate.

The split index reveals the interconnections among this small band of researchers, as well as illuminates the influence of a few pioneers who had died before these interviews took place. I like to think of them as ghosts who continue to look over the shoulders of these early explorers. Interestingly, some of the ghosts have more index entries than the subjects of the interviews, and they don't all come across in the most positive light, as these very candid conversations reveal.

As to the appropriateness of the title, Higher Wisdom, consider this thought from Myron Stolaroff: "Ultimately, true liberation in the Buddhist sense is reaching wholeness, where you are totally at peace and intimate with everything that exists. If you leave out EVEN ONE person, you've left out part of yourself; you can't be really whole until you've absolutely accepted EVERY living creature."

The emphasis in that quote was added by me . . . and for me. It is something I am still struggling to put into practice. My bet is that you will also find a great deal of wisdom in this fine little book. I highly recommend it.
