In addition, Wahlsten's dry humor makes this a fun read, even the "dryer" chapters: I found myself cracking up regularly while reading his statistics chapter... Electromyography in Clinical Practice: A Case Study Approach Review

I studied this book many times (resident, fellow, before exams), and every time I found myself learning from it more and more.
It is about 300 pages, with 25 cases. The first 16 cases deal with common entrapment neuropathies, radiculopathies, etc in upper and lower extremities (8 cases each). The last nine cases are oriented for generalized diseases such as Myasthenia, AIDP, botulism, etc. Each case starts with history/exam followed by few questions. The next 2-3 pages are the NCS/ENG findings. The next 5-15 pages (varies between cases) are rich with very informative discussion about the electrophysiological findings, anatomy with pictures and charts, clinical with few tables, then a lengthy electrophysiological explanations about the particular case and its differential diagnosis, with many tables( key EMG muscles, LEMS versus MG). The case ends with a follow up.
As I said above, I keep learning from this book, and I do not hesitate to recommend it.

Intelligent Data Analysis: An Introduction Review

This is a book by Springer Verlag that came out if 1999. This book introduces a lot of useful statistical tools and has chapters written by statisticians and computer scientists. The editors also contribute. They emphasize useful tools and computer tools. It includes material from the artificial intelligence literature including fuzzy set logic, genetic algorithms and expert systems. There is some discussion of data mining, Bayesian methods and neural networks.

Chapters are written on an elementary level for students and pratictioners of modern data analysis techniques. Written mainly as a text but expanded to cover topics of interest to researchers in statistics and computer science by subject matter experts. The last chapter on Systems and Applications by Xiaohui Liu includes coverage of data quality. Among the references on data quality and outlier detection is the book edited by Wright "Statistical Methods and the Improvement of Data Quality". That book was a collection of papers from a conference held in Oak Ridge Tennessee in 1982. That volume was published by Academic Press in 1983. It is not often sighted in the statistical literature but it did contain a number of interesting papers. I contributed a chapter on influence function methods for outlier detection to the Academic Press book.

Hand has written many books on statistics and especially some excellent texts on classification and pattern recognition. His recent work on data mining was published in 1999 by MIT press, a volume he coauthored with Mannila and Smyth. it is one of teh few data mining texts that is highly regarded by the statistical community. Much of that work in referenced in this book particularly in Chapter 1, the overview chapter on intellegent data analysis that Hand wrote himself.

Resampling methods, generalized linear models, Bayesian methods, time series, multivariate analysis, random effects models and entropy are all covered with nice elementary introductions.

This is a great reference source with over 440 articles and books in the list of references.

Presidents and Civil Liberties from Wilson to Obama Review

Liberals have their list of great presidents and conservatives, theirs, but no one on any position in the political spectrum could likwly anticipate some of the findings of this book. Certainly I didn't. Wilson, who I thought one of the great Democratic Party progressives, was in fact arguably more repressive than any Republican President and wanted only to "crush" those who disagreed with his leading America into WW I. We all know about Harding, or think we do, until we find that he was the first President and the last until Truman, to advocate for full political equality for African-Americans, going so far as to beard the lions of segregation in their own Birmingham Alabama den, with a civil rights speech that certainly ranks among the most courageous ever given by an American president. And on it goes, our heroes are found to have blemishes and our villains have unexpected laurels when it comes to civil rights and civil liberties. The generalization one can make is that when we elect a president, be our choice conservative or liberal, we won't know until later how they actually feel about our bill of rights protections...and this book shows that generally the record has not been good. Well-written, concise histories of each presidency starting with Wilson to the present are given and the 500+ pages of fine print, well annotated, is a joy to read either seriatum or simply dipping into various president's administrations. I would recommend, with this book, a companion piece of reading: Political Repression in Modern America from 1870 to the Present, by Robert J Goldstein, a reworking and amended version of a doctoral dissertation. Goldstein's book further illuminates some of the incidents you will find interesting in Samuel Walker's excellent book.
