Evidence-based interventions should be based on functional goals. In stroke rehabilitation, a number of restorative therapies currently exist, and others are in various stages of development. Approaches aimed at improving arm motor function include constraint-induced movement therapy, antispasticity medications, exercise, functional electrical stimulation, and robotic therapy.

A recent review of randomized controlled trials indicates that restorative therapies improve function when compared to no treatment. Superiority of one type of therapy over another could not be distinguished, and therefore, a specific choice of therapy was difficult to justify.

Despite evidence suggesting that rehabilitation may be useful in brain restoration and in stroke therapy patients, there is little information available describing the precise nature of interventions provided by rehabilitation therapists. Identifying interventions that can improve motor function remains a priority. This book will provide an overview of the current understanding of modern rehabilitation therapies and their effects on plasticity and recovery of motor function in stroke. The book concludes with a description of how the patient and the patient� s family members are essential members of the rehabilitation team. Patient and family involvement are described in detail.

One of the most comprehensive books about stroke. It listed tons of information about functional outcome measures. The exact form for each outcome measure is not included. I guess because that might make the book too lengthy, but it would be good to have as an appendix. There are numerous stroke interventions included. The author help choose the best outcome measure to use depending on the problem. I would recommend this book. 15 continuing education hours in my state (Nevada Physical Therapy).

Withrow and MacEwen's Small Animal Clinical Oncology Review

As in the previous editions of this textbook, the content is generally very good. However, some chapters are more accurately updated than others.

Unfortunately, most pictures are dated and look really old. There are some really grainy radiographs and many pictures of tumors are poorly lit. Although this may seem like a minor issue, it still puzzles me, as nowadays digital xray and digital cameras should be available in most veterinary clinics.
