This text is engaging and comprehensive, covering both qualitative and quantitative methods, with many examples of actual research from a variety of fields. It is easy and enjoyable to read, and I hope to be able to use it in the future for teaching research methods to honors-level undergraduates or graduate students.

I considered using this book for my first semester teaching an introductory course in research methods for undergraduates. My colleagues who have taught this course previously told me not to overestimate the level at which the course should be taught, and to err on the side of caution as far as choosing the level of the course. After reading this text, I realized that it would be great for a more advanced course, but I decided not to adopt the text for this very very introductory course. I would not hesitate to use this book for honors-level or advanced undergraduates or graduate students. I thought it might be a risk to suggest this book for a very very basic class.

(p. xi) The authors do an admirable job of enticing readers into their game. This solid work presents the essentials, intricacies, and challenges of evaluating leadership development programs. Most readers will be outsiders to this specialized field, but the book is accessible and relevant to anyone who leads or works with leaders, as well as to its primary audience of evaluation practitioners.

The authors acknowledge that "Leadership means many things to many people" (p. xi) and suggest that evaluation is one way to ensure that leadership programs are really about leadership, as defined by program stakeholders. The 19 chapters that follow explore how evaluation can meet the needs of both traditional stakeholders, such as program participants and funding sources, and more distal beneficiaries in surrounding communities and in the evaluation profession.

The first of the book's three sections reviews strategies for designing leadership evaluations. The reader leaves this section with a firm grasp of the basic tools needed to evaluate leadership development programs. Section two explores evaluation in context. The authors examine evaluation of leadership development in an evaluation professional association, municipal nonprofits, health service organizations, for-profit manufacturing corporations, grant recipients of philanthropic foundations, school systems, adolescent leadership programs, and "distressed" neighborhoods. Each chapter follows a helpful strategy of profiling the leadership development program, summarizing the evaluation activities, and highlighting lessons learned.

The final section discusses how evaluations should be designed, conducted and reported to increase chances that results will be used. Readers are invited to visit the book's web site ([...]) to participate in an ongoing discussion of how to improve leadership evaluation.

Effective communication is a theme of this book on two levels. The chapters are well written, logically organized and make effective use of flowcharts and diagrams. The authors model a concern for effective communication that many of them also discuss explicitly. For example, Chapter 12 stresses communicating with participants and stakeholders in language they understand (p. 358). Chapter 17 begins with a story about a communication crisis that both illustrates and models effective storytelling and ends with advice about the delicate task of communicating negative evaluation findings.

An issue not well addressed is which leadership competencies are responsive to development in the first place. Are some key competencies more a product of innate abilities or early learning? Such abilities may be hard to change through any type of development. Evaluators should consider whether some programs may target the unchangeable. Some chapters tread close to this issue, recommending pretesting before a program begins (p. 148) and acknowledging that different competencies may be required by leaders in different disciplines (p. 194) or leadership roles (such as leading versus managing--p. 237). But there is no explicit consideration that leadership competencies may differ in their fundamental learnability. To the contrary, the programs evaluated in Chapter 8 all assume that "leadership can be learned" (p. 231) in a broad sense. Leadership development evaluation practice can benefit from a closer examination of this issue.

This is a good reference book. If you are an evaluator or design leadership training, consider adding it to your personal bookshelf--after a determined effort to get your employer to buy it for you first, of course. Up and Running with Autodesk Inventor Simulation 2011: A Step-by-Step Guide to Engineering Design Solutions Review

Autodesk Inventor Simulation 2011 is a 3D mechanical solid modeling design software used in the design, visualization and simulation of products via the creation of 3D digital prototypes. Compared to Autodesk Inventor 2011, it has two important additional features: Dynamic Simulation and Finite Element Analysis. Inventor Simulation omits two features that are in Inventor: Tube & Pipe Design and Cable & Harness Design.

This is a textbook organized into three major sections: Dynamic Simulation, Chapter 1 to 8; Stress Analysis, Chapter 9 to 16; and Frame Analysis, Chapter 17 to 19. Each section begins with an overview, followed by chapters of different design problems. The book is a paperback that is printed on 8.5" by 11", Letter-size paper. All diagrams, illustrations, and screenshots are in full color, making reading and understanding the problem, design concepts and approaches, and solutions much easier.

In the Dynamic Simulation section, the author uses seven design problems to explain and illustrate the process of joint creation, a very powerful but difficult to master feature of Inventor Simulation. Each design problem is devoted to a chapter and is explained in detail from eight to twenty pages, depending on the complexity of the design problem. The problems are generally presented in increasing complexity. They are Size A Motor, Size A Jack, Size Multiple Actuating Jacks, Advanced Simulation Settings, Size A Spring, Size A Spring 2, and Simulate A Sprocket Chain.

The format of presentation is:

1. Joints introduced/covered in this design problem.
2. Key features and workflows introduced in this design problem.
3. Introduction (description of the problem)
4. Workflow of design problem (Grouping/Welding -> Joints -> Environment Constraints -> Analyze Results).

Each stage of the workflow is described and illustrated extensively and in minute detail that it is in fact possible to learn and understand the software as it is applied to the design problems without a computer.
Stress Analysis section is covered from chapter 9 to 16. Starting with the 2010 release of Inventor Simulation, stress and model analysis has been expanded from a single-part to multi-part (assembly) capability.

In my opinion, this book does live up to the name of its title - Up and Running with Autodesk Inventor Simulation 2011, Second Edition: A step-by-step guide to engineering design solutions. It is very easy to read and understand.
