Applied Organizational Communication: Theory and Practice in a Global Environment (Routledge Communication Series) Review
I have used this text for masters-level coursework in organizational communication for years, starting with the first edition in the 1990s.
This third edition, copyright 2008, is already four years old--"forever" in today's textbook market. But I think it is still worth the money. I haven't yet found a replacement worth the money or the time needed to retool my courseware around it.
While the material on communication technology is always changing, and therefore out of date as soon as a book is released to the print market, the other material is well-researched and described. Again, the Third Edition offers refreshed theoretical and practical insight as well as topical/chapter reorganization.
Harris offers, as I have said to many students over the years, the best mix of theoretical sophistication and pragmatic application. This book is worth keeping.
The one important conceptual weakness of the volume is that of intercultural divergence in organizational communication: Thomas and Nelson address Geert Hofstede's individualism/collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity/femininity under "Globalization" in Chapter 2 [Perceptions & Paradigms] at the paragraph level, there's so much more to say about cultural differences in communication at work. The topic easily deserves its own chapter.
For leader/managers outside of the academic setting, the book is written in an accessible and understandable way. For instructors and students in the academy, though, Harris offers issues and questions in such a way as to provide excellent points of departure for group processing, and personalization by knowledgeable and experienced instructors.
While a little pricey, this book still stands out among the many that address the topic as a theoretically rigorous and pragmatically approachable text.
What would be perfect for my current teaching needs is a volume specifically targeted to communication in public organizations. "Organizational communication in public service" would be a hot seller not just in my classes, but in many courses taught in a large number of departments and schools of Public Affairs/Public Administration across the U.S. and increasingly around the world. Good communication at work is not just a business need--it's a pressing governance need as well.
