Years ago while I was an undergraduate I decided to consider Economics as a major. I'd read a couple articles and these interested me to learn more--despite my high school Economics experience. One of the articles was Yanis Varoufaknis' (co-written with Joseph Haveli) 'The Global Minotaur' in Monthly Review.
I was so interested by the argument presented by Mr. Varoufaknis in that article that I...almost bought this book! And then checked it out from my college library! Then I bought it.
I credit this book with getting me an "A" in all the 'neoclassical' economic theory classes I had to take at the undergraduate level (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Labor Economics, as well as, History of Economic Thought).
The book is a gem. The writing flows and somehow maintains your interest in even the most arcane discussions of neoclassical economics. There are excellent quotes interspersed throughout the text. Brain teasing puzzles, paradoxes, and thought-experiments. Excellent summaries of a wide range of debates on a host of theoretical, policy, philosophical, and political issues relating to economics. Debates that can and will--if you're at all interested in economics--help you decide into what arena of economics you'll want to study. Or, whether or not you will want to study economics at all--and maybe, why you should or shouldn't. But besides all that, the book is a masterpiece in that it's an enjoyable and readable detailing of what modern economics is, and why it is that way. What an accomplishment! And once you have a solid understanding of those--which this book not only offers but demands--economics becomes not dismal but somehow, intriguing. Get your hands on this book. You'll be happy you did.

McGraw-Hill Handbook of Electrical Construction Calculations, Revised Edition Review

I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is.

This is a really great book that considers the collaboration effort of fire protection specialists and structural engineers in building design. Some of the most important recommendations provided by NIST (NIST, Final Report of the National Construction Safety Team on the Collapses of the World Trade Center Towers, 2009) after the tragic 9/11/2001 events are as follows:
1. This book is a fairly concise but informative systematic review of periodontal diagnosis and various treatment modalities. The main body the text mostly consists of the authors' reviews of literature regarding various topics, and all of the sources are well documented. This makes it a great overview as well as a gateway into finding published articles on whatever relevant topic may interest you.

Not surprisingly considering the title, the book is somewhat light on the gritty details of each and every scenario you may encounter during surgery, but it's still a great review/primer. As a general dentist who does some periodontal surgery, it was 'deep' enough to learn from but did not get lost in clinically-irrelevant microbiology or epidemiology like some other perio books.

It only gets four stars because Coen's Atlas of Periodontal Surgery has good lit review too, but also has more numerous and higher quality photos and drawings. This book's lit review and the author's opinions are a bit more thorough, so it really depends on what you're looking for.
