Sexual Murder

Product Description
This book is the culmination of nearly 30 years of experience with sexually motivated homicides. The author explores the two types of sexual murders: catathymic, which is caused by a break-through of underlying sexual conflicts, and compulsive, in which a fusion of sex and aggression results in a powerful internal drive that pushes the offender to seek out victims to kill - and the killing itself is sexually gratifying. Both forms of sexual murder are presented in this volume from a clinical-descriptive perspective. Through a variety of case studies from the author's personal experience, this amazing book broadens the reader's view of sexual murder and alters many preconceived ideas.
</p>Sexual Murder Review
We went through an era, especially in the 80s and 90s, when so-called "experts" on murder seemed to appeal to their reading audience's desire for erotic, titillating, and extraordinarily bloody tales of crime. Teaching moments were not all that relevant; gruesome entertainment was. Horrible crime details, often told by former FBI agents, filled a specific genre that appealed to a very specific type of reader, often the lay person. The authors would tell stories of their bold, brave, and daring moments in law enforcement when they helped break cases of serial killers or mass murderers, much to the adulation of the reader.Schlesinger's book, Sexual Murder, is very different, even from texts written by academicians for criminal justice courses. This book is clearly for the professional who must deeply understand the psychological makeup of all kinds of killers. The book rests on catathymia theory, an old but certainly not outdated foundation from which we can understand many types of murderers. Catathymic theory posits that unresolved emotionally charged conflicts can be triggered in such a way that the emotional tensions are released in an explosion of anger, often resulting in "overkill." The powerful emotional issues simmer in a person's psyche until life tensions stimulate their release. The inner tension percolates closer and closer to the surface until, with apparent suddenness, a crystalization point is reached and killing is the only "solution." Interestingly, many catathymic killers report great relief, even calm, after their fatal explosions.
Schlesinger begins by explaining an amalgam of etiology factors that give rise to murder including: personal (often sexual) inadequacy, maternal sexual abuse, paternal indifference or rejection, belittling, abandonment, brain dysfunction, dissociative phenomenon, overcontrolled and controlling personalities, a history of animal maltreatment, delusions, and much more. From reading Sexual Murder one can eventually appreciate an "emotional logic" behind the murderous behavior, not as an excuse, but a way to properly diagnose the individual killer standing before us and also how to fashion public prevention measures.
There is minimal time spent using psychopathy as the sole paradigm to understand murder; that is too shallow and lacks utility. Schlesinger -- while addressing customary issues such as paranoia, narcissism, borderline traits, schizoid features, etc. -- develops a refreshingly logical paradigm for understanding the differential diagnostic assessment skills for truly understanding the murderer, whether it be for interviewing purposes or prison management work. The reader will come away from this text with a classification system that will assist psychiatrists, psychologists, police, prosecutors, judges, and prison officials in understanding these complex individuals. Readers will come to an understanding of the differences between acute and chronic catathymic murder, organized and disorganized murder, serial killing, spree killing, mass murder, ritualistic murder, compulsive murder, and sexually addictive murder. It will become clear how each type of murderer will release his hostility, how quickly he will lash out, what reaction he will have to his crime, if he will cover up the crime, who will be targeted, and how the life will be extinguished. Not pleasant information to read, but absolutely the kind of detail the true professional must be made aware of.
In a society given to reductionistic thinking, with killing being about simplistic notions like evil, Sexual Murder takes a far, far deeper look at this part of America's dark side. With good information like this, we will have increased our chances of containing this type of violence. This is must reading for any professional having direct contact with murderers.
